ABOUT RAND FISHKIN

Rand Fishkin co-founded Moz in 2003 and spent 15 years growing it into one of the most recognized names in SEO, reaching 200+ employees and $50M+ in annual revenue. He stepped down as CEO in 2014, left the company in 2018, and channeled the experience into "Lost and Founder," a book that dismantles Silicon Valley startup mythology with uncomfortable honesty. He also created Whiteboard Friday, the video series that became the SEO industry's default educational format for over a decade.

In 2018 he co-founded SparkToro with Casey Henry, building an audience research platform that shows marketers where their audiences actually spend attention online. More recently, he co-founded Alertmouse, a brand mention monitoring tool, and Snackbar Studio, an independent video game company. He co-authored "The Art of SEO" (O'Reilly) and co-founded Inbound.org, later acquired by HubSpot.

On the podcast, Rand presented research that should make every AI visibility vendor uncomfortable. His team had 600 volunteers run prompts through ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI tools nearly 3,000 times. The finding: fewer than 1 in 100 runs produced the same list of brands, and fewer than 1 in 1,000 produced that list in the same order. The AI ranking tools selling "position tracking" are measuring something that statistically doesn't exist. His argument is that brand building, not prompt optimization or AI tracking dashboards, remains the only reliable path to visibility. The companies showing up consistently in AI responses earned that presence through years of genuine mentions across the web, not through gaming probabilistic outputs. Google, he noted, is still 210 times larger than ChatGPT. The fundamentals haven't changed. The scoreboard just looks different.
